Who Are We?
West Central Services is a subsidiary company of West Central
Electric Cooperative located in Higginsville Missouri. To know
who we are, it is necessary to know where we came from and the
reason for our existence. West Central Electric Cooperative was
created as a part of the Rural Electrification Program back in
the 1930’s. At that time, the investor-owned utilities refused
to provide electrical service to rural consumers because they
felt it was not cost effective to do so. The return on their investment
was much lower than more densely populated areas such as cities
and towns, so the rural people were left “in the dark”,
so to speak.
Now, in the 21st century, a similar situation has arisen, only
this time, the void has been in the internet access area. The
cable and telephone companies have refused to invest the resources
to build the infrastructure to make high-speed internet available
to the rural consumer. In the past few years, our society has
changed rapidly and the use of the internet has changed dramatically.
We in “The Country” again were finding ourselves left
out, and in dire need of high-speed internet access.
In January of 2005, the Board of Directors and the management
of West Central Electric Cooperative researched this need and
investigated the possibility that West Central Electric could
meet the needs of our members. They learned that NRTC (The National
Rural Telecommunications Cooperative) had joined with WildBlue
and DirecTv to offer high-speed internet and satellite television
to rural America through the distribution cooperatives such as
West Central Electric. The Board of Directors felt that it was
their duty to provide what the telecommunications industry refused
to provide and meet the needs of its members. As a result of that
diligence, West Central Services was created as a subsidiary of
West Central Electric Cooperative.
While West Central Electric, a member-owned electric cooperative,
may only serve its members, West Central Services may serve anyone
and a membership is not required. It is the mission of West Central
Services to provide high-speed internet and satellite service
to its customers at the same high level of service that West Central
Electric Cooperative provides to its members. By teaming up with
NRTC, WildBlue and DirecTv we will provide world-class technology
with local people who are dedicated to the “Cooperative
Spirit” and surpass the service that our “city”
neighbors receive.
